With the Croatian getaway star in full ascendance, it seems rarely does a week go by without a new festival being announced at the now-infamous Garden Zadar beachfront resort in the village of Petrcane on the Dalmatian coast. It’s nice, then, to see the event that helped kick start this non-stop Balkan summer party season still going strong. In fact, The Garden Festival is showing absolutely no sign of slowing down, as 2010 looks set to be its biggest and most successful year yet.
Now in its fifth year, and taking place for the first time across two separate weekends, the roster of artists appearing at this year’s Garden Festival is positively trouser-moistening. In fact, it’s so vast that it’s a little difficult to work out where to start. Spread across four separate venues in this breathtakingly beautiful site – and one rather special sailing vessel for some nautical boat party action – over 85 different live acts and DJs will be plying their wares to 3000 sun-seeking club fiends.
Beginning with the live acts, there will be performances from seminal dance quartet 20:20 Soundsystem, brass-toting funksters Breakestra (along with a special appearance by Jurassic 5′s Chali 2na), northen nu-disco supremos Crazy P, alt-techno wunderkind Henrik Schwarz and this year’s irrepressible summer soundtrack act The Phenomenal Handclap Band, among several others.
When it comes to the DJs, however, the list is longer than a snake in a trouser press – and twice as deadly. On the house front there will be sets from Freerange boss Jimpster, Crosstown Rebels newbody Glimpse, tech-soul maestros Ame, Mulletover main-man Geddes and Wolf+ Lamb’s Gadi Mizrahi. Funk-fans and disco-lovers will rejoice at the sight of Faze Action, Filthy Dukes, Ron Basejam, Florian Keller and Yam Who?, not to mention an exclusive live performance by Killer Whale of his recent and much-lauded tribute to the late, great Arthur Russell. Finally, those on a techno-tip will barely be able to contain their saliva as they drool over the prospect of Dixon, Greg Wilson, Jamie Jones, Seth Troxler and Sebo K.
Factor in additional sets from such feelgood free-for-all tune selectors as Norman Jay, Joe 90, Bonobo, Mr Scruff, Rob Da Bank and the one and only hip-hop legend Qool DJ Marv, and it’s enough to make you go weak at the knees. Make absolutely no mistake, while there may now be more festivals at the Garden site than there are Euros in the Greek national bank account, the Garden Festival remains the grandaddy of them all, and this year looks set to show you why.
